The Dunedin Fringe Festival was initiated in 2000 to bring innovative contemporary art being produced by Dunedin artists to a wider audience. Since then the Festival has grown to involve artists from throughout New Zealand and overseas. Festivals have been held in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008.
From 2009 the Dunedin Fringe Festival is an annual event held in late March/early April of each year. The timing of the Festival follows the Wellington, Auckland and Adelaide Fringe Festivals allowing the development of an Australasian touring circuit ending in Dunedin.
Independent artist events form the backbone of the Dunedin Fringe Festival and are facilitated through an open-access registration process. This takes place in November each year with participating artists able to apply to the Festival for funding grants for new work or to tour a work to Dunedin. In 2009 50% of shows are by artists from Dunedin with the remaining 50% touring artists from throughout New Zealand and overseas.
